# Basic Agent

> Run a Claude agent through Vertex AI and print its response.

Create an Agno agent backed by Claude on Vertex AI.

## Code

```python basic.py theme={null}
from agno.agent import Agent, RunOutput  # noqa
from agno.models.vertexai.claude import Claude

agent = Agent(model=Claude(id="claude-sonnet-4-6"), markdown=True)

# Get the response in a variable
# run: RunOutput = agent.run("Share a 2 sentence horror story")
# print(run.content)

# Print the response in the terminal
agent.print_response("Share a 2 sentence horror story")
```

## Usage

**1. Set your environment variables**

```bash Mac theme={null}
export CLOUD_ML_REGION=xxx
export GOOGLE_CLOUD_PROJECT=xxx
```

```powershell Windows theme={null}
$Env:CLOUD_ML_REGION="xxx"
$Env:GOOGLE_CLOUD_PROJECT="xxx"
```

**2. Authenticate your CLI session**

```bash theme={null}
gcloud auth application-default login
```

>
> You don't need to authenticate your CLI every time.

**3. Install dependencies**

```bash theme={null}
uv pip install -U 'anthropic[vertex]' agno
```

**4. Run Agent**

Save the code above as `basic.py`, then run:

```bash theme={null}
python basic.py
```
